چکیده

Characterization and interpretation of flat ancient material objects, such as those found in archaeology, paleoenvironments, paleontology, and cultural heritage, have remained a challenging task to perform by means of conventional x-ray tomography methods due to their anisotropic morphology and flattened geometry. To overcome the limitations of the mentioned methodologies for such samples, an imaging modality based on Compton scattering is proposed in this work. Classical x-ray tomography treats Compton scattering data as noise in the image formation process, while in Compton scattering tomography the conditions are set such that Compton data become the principal image contrasting agent. Under these conditions, we are able, first, to avoid relative rotations between the sample and the imaging setup, and second, to obtain three-dimensional data even when the object is supported by a densematerial by exploiting backscattered photons. Mathematically this problem is addressed by means of a conical Radon transform and its inversion. The image formation process and object reconstruction model are presented. The feasibility of this methodology is supported by numerical simulations. © The Authors. Published by SPIE under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License. Study of the Compton scattering effect of soft tissue in PET imaging by Monte Carlo method

Introduction:In PET imaging, one or both of two annihilation photons may change the direction before reaching the detector due to Compton scattering interaction in body. .Methods:This article, a Monte Carlo simulation study, examined the effect of soft tissue on this error. In this work, the PET BiographTM 6 scanner, a simple geometry of soft tissue -including a sphere of soft tissue in center ...

Artifact reduction techniques in Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) imaging modality

Introduction: Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) was introduced and became more common based on its low cost, fast image procedure rate and low radiation dose compared to CT. This imaging modality improved diagnostic and treatment-planning procedures by providing three-dimensional information with greatly reduced level of radiation dose compared to 2D dental imaging modalitie...

An iterative method to estimate x-ray attenuation coefficients in computed tomography

Introduction: The basis of image formation in Computed Tomography (CT) lies in the x-ray linear attenuation coefficient of the scanned material. Compton scattering and photoelectric effect are the dominant interactions of the x-ray photons with the subject, in the range of diagnostic radiology. These two coefficients are important in tissue characterization by Dual-Energy CT (D...

Use of an opacity constraint in three-dimensional imaging

Three-dimensional imaging provides profile information not available with conventional twodimensional imaging. Many three-dimensional objects of interest are opaque to the illuminating radiation, meaning that the object exhibits surface, as opposed to volume, scattering. We investigate the use of an opacity constraint to perform three-dimensional phase retrieval. The use of an opacity constrain...
